With a hectic week at work, it's been a consistent diet of takeout food and I've obviously been lagging on both my blog posts and visits to my favorite blogs. So, to those blogs/bloggers that I visit regularly (and you know who you are), I have not forgotten any of you. Life just sort of has been getting in the way lately.
Since it's Mother's Day today, I find myself thinking about my relationship with my own mother. My relationship with her can best be described as ambivalent. We've always been at odds with each other whenever we're in the same room. Yet, we get on with one another quite swimmingly once we are separated by the Earth's imaginary lines of latitudes, longitudes, the equator and all the bodies of waters and timezones that lie between California and the Philippines.
For this Mother's Day, and with mango season being in full swing, I prepared this dish that's very, very loosely based on the prawn mango curry that originates from the state of Kerala, India.
This is one of the nice things about living in a tropical island-
great selection of seafoods at relatively cheap prices!
So, my readers, this is what my relationship with my mother would look and taste like if a relationship could be likened to a dish or morsel of food. It's colorful, sweet like the ripe yellow mangoes and king prawns that you see, yet heated (sometimes fiery) like the finely sliced, red bird's eye chillies that you see and tempered by the curry and mustard powders, shallots and all the other ingredients, much in the same way all the timezones and bodies of waters that separate us temper the nature of our complex relationship.
I think I am now slightly disturbed that I can sum up my relationship with my mother in a prawn dish. Yikes!
Prawn Mango Curry
by The Kitchen Masochist
8 pieces of king tiger prawns
2 tbs red Asian shallots, minced
1 tbs garlic, minced
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup white wine
1.5 tbs flour
1 tbsp curry powder
1/2 tsp mustard powder
2 pieces fresh bird's eye chillies, finely sliced
1 cup ripe mango, diced
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste
Directions:
1. Remove the prawns' meat from the shells.
Remove all appendages.
On the prawn's dorsal side, slit the shell open, making sure the shells are intact.
Your shells should look something like this.
Blanch the prawns' shells. Remove from heat as soon as they change in color.
Plunge in cold water.
2. Chop each prawn into 4-5 large pieces. Set aside.
3. Saute shallots and garlic in butter.
4. Add chopped prawns and wine.
5. Add flour, curry and mustard powder..
6. Add mangoes when prawns are done.
7 Season with salt and pepper.
Assembly:
8. Stuff the shells with the prawn mixture, include 5 pieces of chopped prawns per shell.
9. Garnish with chopped basil and chillies.

beautiful prawns and a great recipe and presentation!!! I'm sure your mother would have loved them!
Hey Kitchen Masochist Girl/Lady, I used to be that way with my Mom. She has the type of personality that likes to judge and, therefore, control. She has realized this as of late though and become very sweet and respectful. Oh, yes, and distance helps a lot!
This sounds delicious-all of your seafood does. Wish I could have some now-too hungry!
I love this ode to your mother. I have a similar relationship, making this day kinda hellish. Love the idea of prawns!
What a wonderfully honest and smart post. You are quite introspective. I find it refreshing. The dish looks great and the flavors bright and bold.
I am sure your mother is proud she raised such a strong, smart, and fabulous daughter.
Have a great day.
Cheers!
@ Dennis-
Thanks. I'm quite honored by a compliment coming from you, a trained chef. :)

My mother is more of the critical and meddlesome type. Mind you, she's this with just her children, especially her daughters. I know and always have known that she means well. We're wonderful when we're apart. We just talked for 2 hours on the phone this morning when I called to greet a Happy Mother's Day.

(those brackets are hugs that I'd give if you were here, or if I were there.)
Aww. I truly empathize with you. I know how you feel only too well. I think if I were still living back home in CA, Mom's Day would still be hellish for me. As Stella said, distance helps a lot!
It's her day and just let things alone (even if they annoy you) for today. :)

Once in a while a blog can be a nice outlet to release hidden feelings.
As always, you just say the nicest and sweetest things. :)
This looks so good! I really wish I could get my hands on some philippine mangoes here in nz.
I think everyone becomes "closer" to their parents once distance is involved; unless you have one of those unique relationships where you can go out with them for a coffee.
I have a bunch of mangoes that could be nicely paired with some prawns. Brilliant idea :)
(I don't know if you're a mum, so if you are Happy belated Mother's day! if not, well, I hope you had a lovely day just the same :))
@ Le-
I love Southeast Asian mangoes. They're so juicy and sweet.

I'm not a mother. Phew! I can't really imagine myself being one. I'm just not one of those types of women who were meeant to be mothers.
I was fairly young when I left for abroad and had a very different (immature) mindset, which was: "It's not cool to hangout with the parents. Now I wish I could have coffee with my parents. I think that would be great. :)
Let me know how it goes if/when you try this.
Hey Girl/Lady,
Yes, my mother is only that way with us (her daughters) too. Much different she is with everyone else!
Your blog looks great by the way... I like the new header-it introduces the page nicely.
I'm going to browse around a bit...
Love that presentation it is mouthwatering! Yummy!
great post...my relationship with my mom used to be very let's say "jalapeno" but since having kids and learning patience we have become closer..I love the prawns, thanks for including a how to..great recipe, love the plating

Awww...you just make me so jealous that you can get all those fresh, big prawns there!! I wish I have a magic button...with one click, they just all fly and land right in front of me! :D Mmm...your dish looks very colourful and delicious. I wish I can get all the fresh and ripe mangoes too....mmm
What a beautiful dish!!! I can't wait to impress my love one with this dish :) Thanks for sharing.
Also, I saw your warning about the virus on Islandeat's blog. Thanks for that too!
Take care.
That looks wonderful and deliciously spicy!
Cheers,
Rosa
These are the best and most yummy prawns I've seen in a long time!
Hi, KM. I adore your anatomical diagrams of prawn dissection. Well done!
I also enjoyed your frank discussion about mother-daughter relationships. Honesty in food blogs or elsehwere is always good.
Thanks again for your warning about the virus.
Yours,
Dan

A "jalapeƱo" relationship sounds stressful.
Ah, the power of grandchildren! I've always been amazed by the effect they have on grandparents. :) Nice to know things are going smoothly now.
I hope you try this and let me know how it goes if/when you do.

If you can have all the fresh, cheap salmon, it's only fair that I
get fresh big prawns! ;)
I love Southeast Asian mangoes. They're so juicy, sweet and succulent.

Thanks. Be safe and "guard" your blog.
I agree, honesty is not only good, but it's refreshing as well.
Dear KM - What a lovely post and what a lovely dish. Once again you've managed to combine wonderful refreshing flavors to create a dish that is not only superlative is flavors buts also presentation!
Mango & orawns - yummm!! How can one go wrong. I am still recovering from tiger prawn envy though!
Your Mum I am sure loved the sentiment and loved the post.
Hugs, Devaki @ weavethousandflavors
Yikes! Have I been away THAT long?!
Love the new banner btw. Muy caliente! LOL
This is a gorgeous recipe, love the pics and the instructions on deveining and uh, all those other prawny surgical procedures ;)
Hmm...mothers, mothers!!! Complicated indeed. I'd be happy to be able to sum up my relationship with mine in this lifetime...
@ Devaki-
That's quite a compliment considering your culinary skills. :)
I love the selection of prawns/seafood over here. I didn't know there were so many variety of prawns before I moved here.
Hugs. ;)

No, you haven't been away that long. I just overhauled (cosmetically) my blog last weekend in a single day.
Muchas gracias. I've been wanting to change my banner for the longest time since the pic really had nothing to do with the title of my blog.
LOL @ prawn surgical procedures. I dissected a crayfish in biology class when I was in high school. Who would've thought paying attention to high school biology would pay off in the kitchen?
If I can sum up my relationship with my mother in a prawn dish, perhaps it's not as complicated.
sometimes it's easier to sum up a relationship (familial ones) when there's distance involved.
love the new banner
